LEWISBURG, Pa. - Kyle Anthony (Barryville, N.Y./Eldred Central) was named the Field Performer of the Meet after winning the long jump and triple jump, and Bucknell men's track and field claimed six other first-place finishes at the ninth annual Gulden Relays at Gerhard Fieldhouse on Saturday. The Bison were victorious in all but one relay race in the unscored meet on their home track.
"Our men really had a productive day," said head coach Kevin Donner. "We focused on the relays and won five of the six. After a four-week layoff, we can potentially look stale, but this year our guys did the work over the break and looked very good."
Anthony won the triple jump in his second consecutive meet, recording a distance of 48 feet, nine inches. It also bettered his distance from the Bison Opener. The senior also jumped 22-0 1/4 in the long jump to earn his second victory of the day.
Although the 4x200, 4x400, 4x800 and distance medley relays earned victories, the sprint medley and 4x55 shuttle hurdle teams were the only ones to make a dent in the Bucknell record books. The sprint medley unit of Guy Castranova (Trenton, N.J./Notre Dame), Sean Coyne (Freehold, N.J./Freehold Township), Andrew Yehl (Elizabethtown, Pa./Elizabethtown) and Christopher Boyd (Gaithersburg, Md./Thomas Sprigg Wootton) is now ranked in a tie for fifth all-time at Bucknell with a time of 3 minutes 34.50 seconds. Crossing the line in 30.64, which was good for second place at the meet, the 4x55 shuttle hurdle team of Coyne, Rob Arent (New Providence, N.J./New Providence), Dan Mularz (Englishtown, N.J./Freehold Township) and Yehl are now ranked fourth in program history.
Bucknell units took third in both the sprint and distance medleys as well.
The Bison men dominated in the mile, earning the second through fifth places. Leading the pack was Kevin McGoldrick (West Chester, Pa./Henderson) with a time of 4:25.50. Marlon Woods (Cincinnati, Ohio/Winton Woods) and Justin Hicks (Wilmington, Del./Tower Hill School) took second and third, respectively, in the 60 meter dash and Yehl was second in the 60 meter hurdles. Matthew Brooker (Spring Mills, Pa./Penn's Valley) also earned a second-place finish in the 3,000 meters.
Joining Anthony among the top three in their respective field events were Timothy Medlock (Evan Mills, N.Y./Indian River) and Tom Barr (Ambler, Pa./La Salle College HS), who took first and second in the shot put and Zachary Shapiro (River Edge, N.J./River Dell Regional), who earned third place in the weight throw. Drew Fitzgerald (Ballston Spa, N.Y./Ballston Spa) claimed second in the pole vault, as well as fourth in the long jump.
Bucknell is back in action on Friday, Jan. 15 when it travels to Akron, Ohio, for the Akron Quad.
