LEWISBURG, Pa. -- If performances from alumni games counted in the Bucknell University men's basketball record books, John Griffin '08 would own more than a handful of Sojka Pavilion marks after his 37-point effort for the Blue team here on Saturday afternoon. The long range sniper canned nine three-pointers and had 29 of his points in the second half to help lead the Blue team to an 84-79 win over a feisty Orange squad.
Griffin and company entertained the crowd with 16 three-pointers and an array of tough shots in the paint. Of course there were also dozens of missed shots, including the missed dunk attempts that seem to come along with every alumni game contested these days.
The Blue team jumped out to an 8-0 lead and it looked like it might be a one-sided affair, but behind 10 points from Rob Thomas '08 and six from Ed Sigl '84 in the paint the Orange trailed by just three at the break, 33-30. The game stayed close throughout the second half until Griffin and Hall of Famer Mike Joseph '90 provided a surge with back-to-back three's that just could not be overcome.
Griffin's 37 points led all scorers, while Joseph contributed to the victory with 20 points and 12 assists. Other players for the Blue team included Jason Vegotsky '09 (8 pts), Max Wetzel '99 (5 pts), Brian Muckle '00 (4 pts), Jack Namvou '04 (4 pts), Steve Reddy '76 (4 pts) and Dan Bowen '00 (2 pts).
Holland Mack '06, the high-point scorer in the 2009 alumni game, scored 17 points in the second half and went on to lead the Orange team with 21 points. Thomas finished with 18, followed by Dave Steigerwald '96 who canned four straight three's in the second half to finish with 16 points. Other players for the Orange team included Willie Callahan '99 (10 pts), Sigl (8 pts), Mark Allsteadt '87 (6 pts), and Harvey Edwards '78.
Other alumni in attendance included Hall of Famers Tommy Thompson '60 and Bob Barry '80, Chuck Carroll '68, Pat Flannery '80 and Grant Tormey '89. Former assistant coach Terry Conrad was also at the game. Following the contest, the alumni enjoyed a reception in the McGee Room and will be guests during the Bucknell men's game against Army later on this evening.
