LEWISBURG, Pa. - Bucknell track and field picked up three more weekly honors from the Patriot League on Tuesday. Jennifer Pierce (Ho-Ho-Kus, N.J./Northern Highlands) was named the Patriot League/M-F Athletic Track Athlete of the Week and teammate Chelsey Musante (Shelton, Conn./Shelton) was selected Field Athlete of the Week on the women's side, while Robert Yamnicky (Shelton, Conn./Shelton) earned his first Rookie of the Week citation.
Pierce broke onto the Bucknell record lists with a second-place performance in the 500 meters at the Akron Quad last Friday. The senior's time of 1 minute, 15.94 seconds gave her the seventh-fastest time in program history and qualified her for the ECAC Championship in March. Pierce's success in Akron was not just individual, however, as she also helped the Bison's 4x400 relay to a second-place finish in 3:58.07.
Musante earned a pair of top-three finishes last weekend in Akron. One week after setting the Bucknell record in the shot put, the senior finished second in the event with another ECAC-qualifying mark of 44 feet, 7 inches. It was the third straight meet in which she had met the championship standard. Musante also claimed third place in the weight throw with a mark of 56-6.
Yamnicky made his second intercollegiate appearance a successful one by placing fifth in the mile. His time of 4:21.03 was the best of his young career and the fourth-fastest by a Bison and tops among freshmen this season.
The recognition as the Patriot League's top female field athlete is the fifth of Musante's career. Most recently, the thrower was also recognized as the Damon's Bison Athlete of the Week. Pierce's and Yamnicky's honors are the first of their track careers, although Yamnicky earned a Rookie of the Week award last fall during cross country season.
In other track and field news, the Patriot League announced its preseason poll yesterday. The Bison women were once again voted number one, while the men were selected third behind Army and Navy.
The Bison will be back in action on Saturday when they host the Bucknell Heptagonal at Gerhard Fieldhouse. Action begins at 10 a.m.
