LEWISBURG, Pa. – Bucknell women's indoor track and field was voted the top team in the Patriot League preseason poll, while the men's squad was selected third, the league announced Monday. The Bison women led all teams with 93 points, including 11 first-place votes, earning its sixth consecutive selection as the number-one team at the beginning of the season.
Bucknell's women's team has won the Patriot League Indoor Track and Field title 10 of the last 12 years and has never finished lower than third in 19 years. The Bison were the runners-up at last year's championship after being upset by Navy, which was chosen second in the preseason vote with 89 points and five first-place votes.
The men's preseason poll looks much like it did each of the last two seasons. Ahead of the third-place Bison, which earned 75 points, were Army and Navy. Army led this year's poll with 96 points and 12 first-place votes and Navy claimed second with 87 points, but the academies tied for first in each of the last two preseason tallies. Bucknell split the Black Knights and Midshipmen at the league's indoor championships last season, finishing second to Army.
Rounding out the women's poll was Army in third (76 points), followed by Holy Cross (56) and Lehigh (45). Colgate (40), Lafayette (35) and American (14) hold the final three positions.
Close behind the Bucknell men in the preseason vote was fourth-place American with 70 points, followed by Lehigh (58), Lafayette (48), Colgate (21) and Holy Cross (20).
Bucknell will continue its preparation for the Patriot League indoor championship, hosted by Army Feb. 19-21, this weekend. The Bison will host the Bucknell Heptagonal at Gerhard Fieldhouse on Saturday with competition getting underway at 10 a.m.
