LEWISBURG, Pa. – Bucknell track and field earned its second straight Damon's Bison Athlete of the Week on Monday, as Chelsey Musante (Shelton, Conn./Shelton) received the honor after breaking the Bison's indoor shot put record at the Gulden Relays last weekend. The senior thrower also was named the Field Performer of the Meet following competition.
Musante, who was ranked third all-time in the shot put prior to the meet, moved up two spots on the record list with a throw of 46 feet, 8 3/4 inches. That distance improved her previous personal best by more than a foot and broke the program record by more than six inches.
Musante began the 2009-10 indoor season with a pair of top-two finishes at the Bison Opener in December. She won the weight throw at the home meet for the second consecutive year with a throw of 57-7. Although Musante was already ranked second all-time at Bucknell, that performance moved her nearly one foot closer to the school record. Musante also placed second in the shot put with a throw of 44-5 1/2. Her distances in both events qualified her for the ECAC Championships in March.
The success in the shot put has not been limited to indoors for Musante, as she is ranked fourth all-time at Bucknell outdoors with a career-best throw of 44-8, set last year at the Patriot League Championship.
Despite having four Patriot League Field Athlete of the Week awards to her name, this is the first Damon's Bison Athlete of the Week honor of Musante's career.
Bucknell track and field will compete next at the Akron Quad on Friday, Jan. 15. The Bison will face the host Zips as well as BIG EAST opponents in Cincinnati and South Florida in Akron, Ohio. The meet is scheduled for a 7 p.m. start.
