LEWISBURG, Pa. - Richie Hyden (Melbourne, Australia/Greenwich (Conn.)), an Honorable Mention All-America selection a year ago, was named the Collegiate Water Polo Association Southern Division Player of the Week for his performance at the Navy Open this past weekend. The member of the Bucknell men's water polo team totaled 10 goals and seven assists as he led the Bison to a solid 2-2 opening-weekend showing.
Hyden, a junior, scored at least one goal in each of the four games Bucknell played, including three against No. 2 Stanford. The left-hander added one goal and one assist opposite No. 4 Cal, and registered six points in wins over Gannon (4g, 2a) and Fordham (2g, 4a).
A veteran of 65 career games, Hyden led the Bison in goals, assists and points over the weekend. His 17 points were more than double the next highest-scoring Bucknell player.
Hyden now has 137 goals, 89 assists and 226 points in his career. He is poised to break into the program top-10 lists in all three categories later this year or next season. No Bison who has played in the last 15 years appears on all three lists.
Bucknell and Hyden will be back in action this weekend at the Princeton Open. The Bison, who are ranked 20th nationally in the latest poll, will face MIT, No. 19 Brown, Iona and No. 4 UCLA.
