HAMILTON, N.Y. - Bucknell cross country opened its 2009 season on a high note, with both the men's and women's teams earning victories at the 15th Annual Harry Lang Invitational hosted by Colgate in Hamilton, N.Y., on Saturday. The Bison claimed the fourth through seventh spots, led by Sarah Moniz (Topsfield, Mass./Masconomet Regional), who completed the 4-kilometer course in 16:30.
Despite the team win, head coach Kevin Donner saw room for improvement with his women's squad.
"Although I was happy we won the meet, some of the girls didn't follow the race plan that I gave them, which had them struggle at the end of the race," said Donner. "I was happy with how some of the middle runners ran, which will give us the depth we will need at the end of the year."
Trailing Moniz was sophomore Alysha Hooper (Meaford, Ontario/St. Mary's), who finished fifth in 16:47. Close behind were classmates Samantha Bower (Greensburg, Pa./Greensburg-Salem) and Kelly Grosskurth (Huntington Station, N.Y./Half Hallow Hills East) in sixth and seventh, respectively.
A fourth sophomore, Kara Weichler (Pittsburgh, Pa./Plum), junior Alexa Griffiths (Tamaqua, pa./Tamaqua) and sophomore Melissa Smith (Mercer, Pa./Mercer Area) rounded out the Bison's top seven.
Both the men's and women's teams are back in action on Sept. 19 at Duquesne. Races in Pittsburgh, Pa., are slated for a 9 a.m. start.
