HAMILTON, N.Y. – Bucknell cross country opened its 2009 season on a high note, with both the men's and women's teams earning victories at the 15th Annual Harry Lang Invitational hosted by Colgate in Hamilton, N.Y., on Saturday. The Bison men finished with six runners in the top 10 on the 6.4K course, including Andrew Huebner (Hampton Falls, N.H./Governor Drummer Academy) who finished second overall (20:36).
The tightly packed finish for the Bison men was a key to the team's victory, according to head coach Kevin Donner, who said the men's race plan included taking advantage of strength in numbers.
“Our men followed the race plan beautifully,” said Donner. “We went out pretty conservatively in a couple of different groups. In the second half they pushed the race and put themselves in a winning position. They handled the Patriot League course beautifully.”
After Huebner, Bucknell's next finisher was senior Conor McNamara (Baldwin, N.Y./Chaminade), who took fourth overall in a time of 20:55. Trailing him by just five seconds was classmate Kevin McGoldrick (West Chester, Pa./Henderson). Junior Ian Shore (South Orange, N.J./Seton Hall Prep) crossed the line in seventh, followed by a wave of youth. Sophomore Dave Brown (Westborough, Mass./Westborough) and freshman Anthony Rizzo (Wapwallopen, Pa./Holy Redeemer) rounded out Bucknell's top finishers.
Both the men's and women's teams are back in action on Sept. 19 at Duquesne. Races in Pittsburgh, Pa., are slated for a 9 a.m. start.
