LEWISBURG, Pa. - After a two-week hiatus, the Bucknell men's water polo team is back in the national rankings this week. The Bison are listed No. 18 nationally in the weekly poll that was released Wednesday afternoon.
Also on Wednesday, Bucknell's contest against Queens (N.Y.), scheduled for Sunday, Oct. 4, at Princeton was cancelled. The Bison will still play the host Tigers in a league contest at DeNunzio Pool at noon on Sunday.
Bucknell (9-5, 3-0 CWPA Southern Division) was ranked No. 18 in the preseason poll, but a 4-4 start to the season saw it drop out of the top 20. The Bison have reeled off five consecutive wins, including three straight at home against league foes, to show up in the poll for the first time since Sept. 9.
With its unblemished league record, Bucknell sits atop the conference standings, narrowly ahead of Navy (1-0 CWPA Southern Division) and Princeton (2-1 CWPA Southern Division).
The Bison have faced a difficult schedule through the first half of the season. They have played seven ranked opponents, including three top-five foes, and are 2-5 in those contests.
Bucknell, which has not won more than five in a row since reeling off nine straight wins in 2007, will conclude a four-game homestand this Saturday against Navy at 12 p.m.. The Mids are ranked 10th nationally and have won 16 straight in the series dating to 2004. The Bison will conclude their weekend with their noon contest at Princeton on Sunday. The Tigers fell from No. 17 to No. 19 after suffering a one-goal loss to the Bison in Kinney Natatorium this past Sunday.
