PRINCETON, N.J. – The Bucknell men's water polo team used a balanced offensive attack to post its first winning streak of the season as it defeated Fordham 13-11 Sunday afternoon at Princeton's DeNunzio Pool to claim fifth place at the ECAC Championship. It is the sixth consecutive year the Bison have finished in the top five at the event, which consisted of 10 teams this year.
Six different Bison netted two goals apiece in a 15-7 win over George Washington Saturday night, and Sunday's contest was more of the same as five different Bucknell players found the back of the net twice each. Richie Hyden (Melbourne, Australia/Greenwich (Conn.)), who was one of the quintet of Bison with two goals, led the way with five points as he dished out a season-high three assists.
Sean Coghlan (Chicago, Ill./Brother Rice), Howie Kalter (Durham, N.H./Phillips Academy Andover), Randy Ang (Hillsborough, Calif./Sacred Heart Prep) and Paul Reamey (Palo Alto, Calif./Palo Alto) joined Hyden with two goals. Ang's two goals were a season high, while Coghlan equaled his highest total of the season.
Nick Donahue (Brooklyn, N.Y./Lawrenceville) started in goal and made five saves while allowing six goals in the first half. Miles Gilhuly (Orinda, Calif./Miramonte) relieved him in the second half and had a solid outing with six saves against five goals allowed.
The score of the game was tied at 6-6 at halftime, but Bucknell used a seven-goal second-half to guarantee the two-goal victory. The Bison remained undefeated (6-0) against unranked opponents and they are now in the midst of their first winning streak since last year's Eastern Championship. Additionally, this was Bucknell's second win over Fordham in 2009. The Bison defeated the Rams 15-9 at the Navy Open two weeks ago.
Bucknell (6-5) will host three league games at Kinney Natatorium next weekend. The Bison will make their home debut against Johns Hopkins Friday, Sept. 25, at 8 p.m. The following day they will host George Washington (1:30 p.m.) and Princeton (5 p.m.).
