PRINCETON, N.J. - Buoyed by a 1-over-par 73 from sophomore Minjoo Lee (Clarkston, Mich./Clarkston), the Bucknell women's golf team shattered its own school record by posting a 307 team score on Sunday afternoon in the final round of the Princeton Invitational at Springdale GC. Lee's terrific round was one of four Bison scores in the 70s, and it helped them to a fifth-place team finish in the competitive event.
The Bison bettered their team scoring record by one shot. The previous mark was a 308, set in April 2008 at the Susie Maxwell Berning Classic at the University of Oklahoma. The 307 came on the heels of a 313 in Saturday's opening round, and with a 36-hole total of 620 - also a school record -- Bucknell finished behind only Rollins College and three of the top Ivy League programs. Rollins won the event with a score of 602, followed by Harvard at 306, Princeton at 612 and Penn at 617. The host Tigers began the day behind Bucknell before leading the field with a final-round 294 on its home course.
Bucknell was 15 strokes clear of sixth-place Richmond, while Georgetown (641), Lehigh (644), St. John's (644), Fairleigh Dickinson (658), Walsh (698) and Monmouth (740) rounded out the field.
Lee just missed her own school record individual score. She posted an even-par 72 at the Rutgers Invitational last fall, which was the first round of even-par or better in program history. On Sunday she settled for 1-over, and coupled with an opening-round 78, she finished in a tie for sixth place, five shots behind winner Joanna Coe of Rollins. It was Lee's second straight sixth-place finish. Last week she was sixth at the Bucknell Invitational and wound up with Big South Player of the Week honors for her efforts.
Kelsey Meybin (Midlothian, Va./Saint Gertrude) backed up a career-best 75 in the opening round with a 78 on Sunday, and she finished 11th at 153. Leah Antkiewicz (Aliquippa, Pa./Quigley Catholic) produced a career-best 77, and Brittany Rendell (Winnetka, Ill./New Trier) made it four sub-80 rounds with a 79.
Remarkably, Bucknell posted a school-record score without counting the card of its top returning player, Katie Jurenovich (Warren, Ohio/Howland), who shot 82 after a first-round 78.
Bucknell will be back in action on Oct. 3-4 at the Penn State Invitational.
