PRINCETON, N.J. – The Bucknell men's water polo team sprinted out to a 5-0 halftime lead and held on for a 9-6 victory over Iona Sunday morning at the Princeton Invitational. Howie Kalter (Durham, N.H./Phillips Academy Andover) tallied two goals and a pair of assists to lead the Bison offense.
Bucknell (4-3) outscored Brown 4-0 in the final quarter of its second game Saturday, giving it a 9-0 advantage over a three-quarter span.
While the Bison jumped out to a large lead, Iona did mount a comeback, closing the score to 8-6 late in the contest. Brett Thompson (Laguna Beach, Calif./Laguna Beach) netted his first career goal to make the final margin three scores.
Miles Gilhuly (Orinda, Calif./Miramonte) recorded a season-high seven saves in goal as he split time with Nick Donahue (Brooklyn, N.Y./Lawrenceville), who earned the start. Donahue did not yield a goal in his 16 first-half minutes.
Kalter, who ranks second on the team with 11 goals this season, was the lone Bucknell player to tally multiple goals as seven other Bison posted a single score apiece. Andrew Nelson (Palos Verdes, Calif./Palos Verdes) and Beau Caillouette (Newport Beach, Calif./Sage Hill School) each added an assist to go along with his goal, joining Kalter in producing multiple-point outings.
As a team, Bucknell's defense recorded a season-high 10 steals. Johnny Stupp (St. Louis, Mo./Mary Institute)), Nick Barnett (Houston, Texas/Clear Lake) and Gilhuly each posted two swipes.
