LEWISBURG, Pa. - One week ago the Bucknell women's water polo team had defeated Princeton just once in 26 all-time meetings. Now, just seven days later, the Bison are on their first-ever winning streak against the Tigers as they defeated them 11-7 Friday evening at Kinney Natatorium. Aubrey Rowe (Carlisle, Pa./Cumberland Valley) led Bucknell, which defeated Princeton 9-7 last Saturday morning, with a season-high five goals, two assists and five steals.
Rowe, who moved into a tie for second with Meg Blitzer on the Bison career goals list with 198, scored three of her goals in the third quarter when the Tigers rallied from a 5-2 halftime deficit to make the score 6-4. Rowe's seven points equaled her season high.
Bucknell (16-11, 3-1 CWPA Southern Division) has now won a season-high six games in a row. Princeton fell to 12-9 overall and 1-3 in league play.
The Bison scored five of their goals in six-on-five situations as they were 5-for-9 when having the advantage. Princeton netted four six-on-five goals in the contest.
Bucknell jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first quarter behind goals from Kristin Vallis (Ridgefield, Conn./Phillips Exeter Academy), Kandis Canonica (Burlingame, Calif./St. Ignatius Prep) and Rowe. The Tigers could not draw closer than three goals the rest of the first half.
Rowe netted a six-on-five goal in the opening minute of the third quarter, staking the Bison to a commanding 6-2 advantage. However, Claire Jacobson and Carolina Ardila netted back-to-back goals 20 seconds apart to make it 6-4 with more than six minutes remaining in the third frame.
Rowe answered back with two goals in the final 2:30 of the third quarter. She put Bucknell up 7-4 on a momentum-changing fast break goal where she was two body lengths ahead of the closest Tiger defender. Then, with just under a minute on the clock she converted a five-meter penalty shot, making the score 8-5.
A goal by Valentina Rozas (Pico Rivera, Calif./El Rancho), her only one in two games against Princeton this season, early in the fourth gave Bucknell a 9-5 lead. Back-to-back goals by Haley Prickett (Newport Beach, Calif./Corona del Mar) and Hallie Kennan (Palo Alto, Calif./Palo Alto) in the final minutes sealed the game and gave the Bison an 11-6 advantage, their largest of the game. Prickett had two goals in the contest as six different players combined for the team's 11 goals.
Alison Carter (Costa Mesa, Calif./Newport Harbor) was strong in goal for Bucknell as she stopped 11 shots, pushing her over the 400 mark for her career. Five of those saves came in the fourth quarter.
Amanda Skonezney (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Cumberland Valley) won all four sprints for the Bison. It marked the fifth time she has accomplished that feat this year.
Jacobson and Lauren Brunner led Princeton with two goals apiece. The Tigers saw their two-game winning streak snapped.
Even with the two-game winning streak against Princeton, Bucknell is still just 3-25 all-time against the Tigers. All three wins have come in the last two seasons.
The Bison, who are closing out their regular season this weekend, are home Saturday for two more league games. They will face George Washington at 1 p.m. and No. 20 Maryland at 4:45 p.m. Sunday's 11 a.m. contest against No. 19 Indiana will be featured on Bison Vision.
