LEWISBURG, Pa. – Three Bucknell women's water polo players earned spots on the CWPA All-Southern Division Team, it was announced this past weekend. Junior Valentina Rozas was named to the All-Southern First Team, while sophomore Kandis Canonica and senior Aubrey Rowe were named to the All-Southern Second Team. Head coach John Abdou was awarded Southern Division Coach of the Year. In addition, Rowe was also named to the Eastern Championship All-Tournament Second Team.
Rozas, last year's Southern Division Player of the Year and an Honorable Mention All-American, scored an impressive 73 goals this season, the second-highest tally in school history. She also added 24 assists for a total of 97 points this season and had 180 total shots, which is a new Bison single-season record. She also had a team-high 89 ejections drawn, good enough for second on the Bucknell single-season record list. She tied the record for most goals in a single game with seven against Occidental in March. This is Rozas' third straight season on the All-Southern First Team.
Canonica was named to the second team for the second straight season. She scored 59 goals this season and tallied 64 assists, which beats her own record for assists in a single season, set last year. She accumulated 123 points on the season, also surpassing her single-season record from last year, and is now second on that list behind Rowe.
Rowe had an impressive final season on offense for the Bison. This season she set new school records in single-season points (128), goals (75) as well as career points (358) and steals (251). This year, she tallied 82 steals, just shy of her program record 84, set last year, as well as 165 shots, the second most for a Bison ever. In additions to having the most career points in program history, she is also on the career lists for goals (2nd-222), assists (2nd- 136), ejections drawn (2nd-168), sprints won (5th-50), shots (2nd-506) and games started (second-122). Last season she was also named to the second team and in 2006 she was the conference Rookie of the Year.
This is Abdou's second straight Coach of the Year Award. During his second season as head coach, he lead the Bison to an 18-17 record while posting a 5-1 record against conference opponents. It was the fourth time in five years that the Bison had a winning percentage over .500. His career record as head coach for the Bison is 44-27. Since Abdou joined the program as an assistant in 2006, Bucknell has a record of 82-53, one of the most successful stretches in the school history.
