LEWISBURG, Pa. – The Bucknell tennis teams play host to Villanova this Saturday at the Fieldhouse Courts at 12 p.m. The men's team carries an overall record of 3-5 on the spring season and the women are 7-5.
Both squads recently returned from Florida Spring Break trips where they each posted a 1-2 record. The men picked up a 7-0 victory over Boston University and the women defeated Florida Gulf Coast, 5-2.
For the men, the Bison have had solid results in the third and six spots with sophomore Mark Malloy (Bronxville, N.Y./Hackley School) and senior Daniel Bednarek (Haworth, N.J./Bergen Catholic). Both have posted records of 6-1 in these courts this year, with overall records of 15-6 and 16-5, respectively. The doubles team of Malloy and junior Zach Hascoe (Greenwich, Conn./Brunswick) has also produced a winning record of 6-1 in the second spot this year.
With two wins this spring, senior Ryan Sandburg (Orange, Calif./Canyon) is inching closer to Ira Reibeisen's program record 145 total victories. With 138 combined wins, Sandburg is just eight wins shy of moving past Reibeisen and into first place.
The women have relied heavily on their number one doubles team of senior Paulina Gamboa (Mexico City, Mexico/Greengates School) and sophomore Lauren Lucido (Woodstock, Md./St. Paul's School For Girls), who have compiled a 9-2 record this season and an 11-3 mark on the year.
Sophomore Lauren Rottkamp (Cold Spring Harbor, N.Y./Cold Spring Harbor), who has only lost one match this season while playing out of the fifth and sixth spot, has been strong in singles play.
Additionally Lucido has a singles record of 16-4 this year and Dumitrita Iepuras has produced a mark of 15-3 between the fall and spring campaigns.
Next up for both Bison squads will be matches at Mount St. Mary's in Emmitsburg, Md., at 3 p.m. on March 24.
