LEWISBURG, Pa. - For the second straight week, the Bucknell women's water polo team swept the CWPA Southern Division weekly awards, it was announced on Monday. Junior Valentina Rozas (Pico Rivera, Calif./El Rancho) was named the Player of the Week, while Amanda Skonezney (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Cumberland Valley) earned her second consecutive Rookie of the Week citation.
Rozas, who also copped Player of the Week honors in late January, totaled 19 goals, seven assists, 12 steals and eight ejections drawn in six games last week. The Bison went 4-2 in those six contests with the two losses coming to nationally ranked opponents.
The highlight of the week for Rozas came in a 14-7 win against Occidental when she netted seven goals and registered a career-high nine points. The goal total equaled Meg Blitzer's single-game program record, while Rozas was one point shy of tying the program single-game standard in that category.
A 2008 Honorable Mention All-American, Rozas was consistent, netting at least three goals four times last week and now leads the team with 61 goals this season. She is third on the squad with 78 points.
In her career, Rozas now stands seventh on the Bucknell points list (236) and fourth on the goals ledger (178).
Skonezney is now a three-time CWPA Southern Division Rookie of the Week. She registered six goals, two assists, four steals and 10 sprints won in six games last week. Skonezney, who has won 56 of 97 sprints this season, now ranks second on Bucknell's single-season sprints won list.
Skonezney recorded two multiple-goal games last week and stands fifth on the Bison in goals (23) and points (36). She is fourth on the squad with 33 steals and has starts in 24 of 25 games.
Bucknell, which went 7-3 on its recent 10-game trip to California, has now earned five Player of the Week honors and four Rookie of the Week citations from the CWPA this year.
The Bison, who are 14-11, will be idle until March 28 when they play at Princeton on ESPNU. That contest is slated to begin at 11 a.m. at Princeton's DeNunzio Pool.
