LEWISBURG, Pa. - The Bucknell women's water polo team continues to dominate the Collegiate Water Polo Association weekly awards as sophomore Kandis Canonica (Burlingame, Calif./St. Ignatius Prep) was named the CWPA Southern Division Player of the Week and freshman Amanda Skonezney (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Cumberland Valley) earned her second CWPA Southern Division Rookie of the Week honor this season, it was announced Tuesday. Canonica is the third different Bison to be named Player of the Week, while Skonezney and classmate Hallie Kennan have won the Rookie of the Week hardware a combined three times.
Canonica tallied seven goals, 16 assists, four steals and drew 10 ejections in five games last week, helping Bucknell (10-10) to a 4-1 week. The lone loss for the Bison came to No. 19 UC San Diego as the award did not include Monday night's loss to No. 13 UC Santa Barbara.
Canonica posted at least four assists in a game three times last week. Her most impressive performance came when she equaled both her career high and the program record with six assists in a win over Cal Baptist.
This year, Canonica leads the Bison with 37 assists and 73 points. The 37 assists ranks seventh on Bucknell's single-season list, while her 98 career helpers place her fourth in program history. Canonica also has 185 points, good for 10th on the Bison all-time ledger.
Skonezney, who is one of three Bison along with Canonica, to start all 20 games this year, had two goals, four assists and nine steals last week. She also won six sprints and now ranks third on the program's single-season list with 47. She has taken all but two sprints for the Bison this season.
Strong on the defensive end of the pool, Skonezney is third on the team with 29 steals, while she ranks fifth on the squad in goals (17) and points (28).
Bucknell is in the midst of a Spring Break trip to California. It is slated to play Cal State Northridge and Occidental on Wednesday. The Bison are 3-2 in the state of California this year.
