ANNAPOLIS, Md. – Trisha Krewson (Sandusky, Ohio/Perkins) posted a career-high 18 points and the Bucknell women's team claimed a season-best 15 steals as the Bison (12-9, 4-4) defeated Navy 66-54 at Alumni Hall on Saturday night.
Bucknell suffered from a slow start to the matchup, making just one field goal in the opening 6:44 on a jumper from Krewson. Cosima Higham (Brooklyn, N.Y./Poly Prep Country Day) and Lauren Schober (Chicago, Ill./Regina Dominican) each hit a pair of free throws, but not until Joyce Novacek (Aliquippa, Pa./Hopewell) at 13:16 did the Bison hit their second shot from the field. By that point, Navy had gotten out to an 11-8 lead.
The Orange and Blue trailed by as many as six points with 6:50 to play, but Navy's (12-11, 5-3) turnovers and difficulty hitting inside shots worked in Bucknell's favor. At 6:34 in the opening half, the Bison's outside shooting caught fire. Down 21-15, Krewson kicked off the spurt with a three-point shot, followed by the same from Amanda Brown (Richardson, Texas/L.V. Berkner). Morgan Wrightson (Gaithersburg, Md./Notre Dame Academy) joined in the action with her own three-pointer as the Mids' defense failed to cover the freshman guard on the right wing. After a quick interruption from a Kalen Kropa layup for Navy, Krewson struck again from behind the arc at 2:57 off a kick-out from Novacek, taking the score to 27-23.
Brown capped off the scoring in the opening stanza with a jumper with less than five seconds remaining, bringing the tally to 31-23. The eight-point lead was the largest for either team to that point.
The second half began quicker than the first, with the bison making some early shots. The squad was also more tenacious on the boards to open the half, retaking the lead on the glass after trailing 23-19 in the category at the break.
Krewson picked up where she left off as well, making two field goals and a pair of free throws in the first 6:19. With her third three-pointer of the night, the most for the freshman in a single game, Krewson surpassed her career high in scoring with more than 14 minutes to play. She eventually finished the game 4-for 5 from three-point distance.
Despite Navy's Whitney Davidson's own success from behind the three-point arc and some inside baskets from Kristin Bowen, the Midshipmen struggled to close the scoring gap. The Bison scored at will and cashed in on their opportunities from the free throw line. Bucknell finished the game 12-for-12 from the charity stripe, the best mark of the season.
Navy's Angela Myers earned three points the old-fashioned way following a Bison turnover and foul, but the play did not seem to faze Bucknell for long. Schober answered with a basket of her own to keep the score 61-49 with 5:34 to go.
Davidson brought the Orange and Blue lead back to single digits with her third three-pointer of the night at 3:57, but it did not be enough as the Mids made just one more field goal for the remainder of the game. Bucknell continued its strong play through the final buzzer, getting its eighth consecutive victory over Navy.
Joining Krewson at the top of the scoring list was Schober with 19 points to lead all players and Brown with 12. Schober also led with eight rebounds, six steals and five assists. Krewson's seven boards tied a career high for the freshman.
Bucknell outrebounded Navy 38-35 on the night. The total marks the third consecutive game in which the Bison have led their opponents on the glass.
Myers led the Midshipmen with 12 points, followed closely by Davidson with 11 and Kropa with 10. Myers also had a team-high eight boards. Navy's top scorer and rebounder, Cassie Consedine, left the game early in the first half with an injury.
The Bison are back in action on Wednesday, Feb. 11 when they take on American University in Washington, D.C. Tip off against the Eagles is slated for 7 p.m.
