CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - Andrew Brouse's (Kreamer, Pa./Midd-West) leadoff home run in the fourth inning accounted for the Bucknell baseball team's lone run in an 11-1 loss to Virginia Sunday afternoon at Davenport Field. The Bison went 0-4 during their season-opening series against the Cavaliers this weekend.
Ben Allen (Port Royal, Pa./Juniata), who had two hits in both ends of a doubleheader on Saturday, extended his hitting streak to three games with a single in the eighth inning. Overall, Bucknell touched Virginia's three pitchers for six hits, including Brouse's home run. It was the first home run by a Bison this season and the fourth of Brouse's career. Brouse also drove in Bucknell's lone run in the second game of Saturday's doubleheader.
Virginia (4-0) scored six runs in the first inning to knock Bison starter Andrew Clarke (Montgomery, Texas/Montgomery) from the game after just 0.1 innings. Dan Grovatt had a two-run triple and Franco Valdes' two-run home run to right-center represented the final batter for Clarke. Jarrett Parker also had a leadoff home run in the frame.
Three Bison relievers - Alex Cillo (Williamsport, Pa./Loyalsock Township), Russell Seidell (Granville, Ohio/Granville) and Jimmy Murphy (Syosset, N.Y./Syosset) - scattered eight hits over the final 7.2 innings. Virginia added on a single run in the fifth on an RBI single by Tyler Cannon. The Cavaliers then plated four more runs in the seventh on three hits, one error and a pair of sacrifice flies.
The Bucknell defense committed five errors in the contest, leading to two unearned runs.
Andrew Loucks (Mississauga, Ontario/Appleby College) recorded the third multiple-hit game of his career with a pair of doubles for the Bison, who collected four extra-base hits in the contest.
Bucknell, which will not play its first home game until March 20, will be on the road again next weekend at Virginia Tech. The teams will play single games on Friday and Saturday. Next Sunday Bucknell will play at VMI.
