BLACKSBURG, Va. - Outside of the final three innings of game one, the Bucknell baseball team played ACC foe Virginia Tech tough in a doubleheader Friday at English Field. However, the Bison were swept in the doubleheader by the Hokies by scores of 10-4 and 2-1. Ben Allen extended his hitting streak to five games and was 5-for-8 in the twinbill for Bucknell (0-6).
Virginia Tech (7-1) tallied eight runs in the seventh and eighth innings of game one to turn a tight 2-1 lead into a large 10-1 deficit for the Bison.
In game two, Bucknell starter Trey Frahler went 7.0 innings and yielded just six hits, two runs, one earned run while striking out six. Both of Virginia Tech's runs came in the fourth inning when a leadoff walk by Anthony Sosnoskie was followed by a single from Steve Domecus. A failed pickoff attempt, one of two Bucknell errors in the contest, allowed Sosnoskie to come around and score. Domecus, who had the lone hit in the inning, later scored on a fielder's choice.
The Bison outhit the Hokies 9-6 in game two with three of the hits coming in the ninth inning when they scored their lone run. A one-out RBI single by Russell Seidell drove home Alex Cillo, who had pinch run earlier in the frame. That brought pinch hitter Matt Lamore to the plate for his third career at bat with the tying run on second and the go-ahead run on first. Lamore grounded into a double play, ending the game with a 2-1 score.
Bucknell totaled just three hits in the first six innings of the second game, with Allen registering two. The junior now has four consecutive multiple-hit games.
Domecus and Ronnie Shaban each had two hits for Virginia Tech in the nightcap. Frahler and reliever Daniel Hart, who pitched a perfect eighth inning, limited the Hokies to six hits after they had 13 in game one.
In game one, Dylan Seeley (0-2) yielded just two hits in the first three innings as Bucknell held a 1-0 lead thanks to a first-inning sacrifice fly by B.J. LaRosa that plated Allen following his leadoff double.
Austin Wates, who was one of five Hokies to post at least two hits in the first game, and Sosnoskie led off the fourth with back-to-back singles, but Seeley worked out of the jam. Two walks and a single sandwiched around a double play knocked Seeley from the game in the fifth.
Chris Yamaguchi relieved Seeley and retired five of the first six hitters he faced, but Virginia Tech totaled seven hits, five of which were for extra bases, and eight runs in the seventh and eighth innings against Yamaguchi, Cillo and Jimmy Murphy. Mike Kaminski and Wates each had two-run doubles during that stretch, while Ty Hohman touched Murphy for a two-run home run.
Doug Shribman posted the first three-hit game of his career in the game one loss as he was 3-for-4 with one run scored. Allen also had three hits as Bucknell recorded four of its 11 hits in the ninth inning. The Bison plated three runs in the inning with Bob Donato, who had three hits in game two, and Ben Yoder each picking up RBI singles. Overall in the doubleheader, Bucknell scored five runs on seven hits in the ninth inning.
The Bison did commit three errors in the twinbill, including two in game two, while Virginia Tech did not commit one.
Bucknell and Virginia Tech were originally scheduled to play a single game on Friday and a doubleheader on Saturday. Early Friday afternoon it was decided the two teams would play twice on Friday and once on Saturday due to the weather forecast. First pitch Saturday is slated for 1 p.m. Bucknell will play at VMI Sunday to wrap up its second consecutive four-game weekend.
