ANNAPOLIS, Md. - With only one day remaining in the Patriot League Indoor Track and Field Championships remaining, the Bucknell men's squad sits in first place. The men have a narrow, four-point lead over second-place Army, 47-43 in the overall scores.
Aiming for their first indoor title since 1993, the Bison men picked up crucial points by sweeping the high jump. Sophomore Drew Fitzgerald (Ballston Spa, Pa./Ballston Spa) picked up the victory with a clearance of 6 feet, 10 ¼ inches to win the meet and jump to a second all-time position in Bucknell history. Last year's Patriot League champion, sophomore Nicholas Hruch (Sykesville, Md./Liberty), took second, tied his personal best, and jumped 6-8 ¼. Freshman Andrew Powell (Charlton, Mass./St. John's) rounded out the top three with a leap of 6-6 ¼.
Powell also placed third in the heptathlon, immediately trailing teammate junior Ryan White (Elkins Park, Pa./Father Judge), who took second. White scored with 4883 points and Powell with 4619.
Junior Kyle Anthony (Barryville, N.Y./Eldred Central), who won a individual Patriot League championship with a victory in the triple jump last year, placed third in the long jump, leaping 23-3 ½, to score for Bucknell.
In the 4x800 meter relay, the Bison took sixth overall, in 7:43.8, with a team consisting of junior Kyle Ramer (Landisville, Pa./Hempfield), sophomore Kevin McGoldrick (West Chester, Pa./Henderson), sophomore Evan Novakowski (Duxbury, Mass./Duxbury), and sophomore Clayton Smith (Sparta N.J./Pope John XXIII).
Bucknell's school record holder, junior Andrew Yehl (Elizabethtown, Pa./Elizabethtown), who has a best of 8.17 seconds, qualified for Sunday's 60-meter hurdle championships, with a time of 8.27, as the third seed.
The men's team will pick up where it left off Sunday at 10 a.m. at the Welsey A. Brown Fieldhouse.
