Bucknell Women's Tennis Blanks Hofstra 7-0

WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. - Bucknell's women's tennis team swept a shorthanded Hofstra team in singles and doubles matches to climb to 4-2 this spring season.
In doubles, junior Tania Varela (Quito, Ecuador/Alliance Academy) and sophomore Lauren Lucido (Woodstock, Md./St. Paul's School For Girls) won in the one spot for the third time this year, defeating Lauren Clifton and Stacey Kent, 8-4.
Senior Paulina Gamboa (Mexico City, Mexico/Greengates School) and junior Carlin Calcaterra (Hinsdale, Ill./Hinsdale Central) won a close match in the second spot with Christie Gattelaro and Brooke Sailer, 9-8. Senior Ashley Globerman (New City, N.Y./Clarkstown High School) and sophomore Dara Dwojewski (Chester, N.J./West Morris Mendham) won by default in the third spot of doubles.
Singles play brought an equal amount of success for the Bison, as Varela beat Clifton in the one spot, 6-2, 6-2. Lucido picked up a win against Gattelaro at the two spot, 7-6, 6-1. Freshman Dumitrita Iepuras (Chisinau, Moldova/Germantown Friends School) overtook Kent in the three spot, 6-3, 7-6.
In a close singles match up in the fourth spot, Globerman defeated Sailer, 3-6, 6-4 and 11-9 in the super tie breaker. Sophomore Lauren Rottkamp (Cold Spring Harbor, N.Y./Cold Spring Harbor) won handily in her fifth spot match up against Ferrar, 6-0, 6-0. Calcaterra won by default in the sixth slot to wrap up singles play for the Bison.
Bucknell will be back in action at St. Bonaventure on Feb. 28 at 1 p.m.
