LEWISBURG, Pa. - Bucknell softball student-athletes will be checking in throughout the season as the team begins its drive for a Patriot League Championship. Here is the next installment of the student-athletes' journals leading up to the 2010 season from junior infielder and early childhood education major, Alison Ford.
Be sure to check out earlier student-athlete journals:
The fall season for the Bucknell Softball team could not have ended any sweeter. With a 5-1 record, promising pitching performances from our two freshman pitchers, and two competitive, nail-biting games against Penn State, our hopes could not be higher for this upcoming spring. As a junior, I have seen our team go through many ups and downs, but the leadership, work ethic, camaraderie, potential and heart of this team cannot be rivaled.
This fall has also left us much to look forward to. A team favorite, our now annual trip to the Cowan Ropes Course, is always highly anticipated, and this year did not disappoint. We successfully completed the task of getting all 21 of us over a 12-foot wall with nothing but each other for support, followed it with fun and games brought to us by our senior class, and ended the night with a bonfire and s'mores. Among practice and fall games, we also participated in the Bucknell Aids Walk, and recently held our fall clinic for girls ranging from age 6 to high school.
One of the highlights of this year, however, has to be our team Thanksgiving dinner. Centered around a 16-pound turkey, roasted to perfection by our own Mary Pavlovich, and topped off by pumpkin and strawberry-apple pie by our team baking extraordinaire Jessie Snyder, it was a feast to be remembered. Needless to say, the looming half-mile that we were to run the following day came nowhere near stopping us from stuffing our faces past our comfort levels.
As we have moved away from our fall season into our winter workouts, our focus has changed greatly. Although we are not able to go outside and practice for these long winter months to come, the anticipation of our spring season serves as continuous motivation for us to work hard in the weight room, during conditioning practices and with our own individual softball skills. We pride ourselves on the notion that we are a "blue collar" team, one that will do what whatever it takes for the girl standing next to her. We look out for each other on and off of the field, and this family spirit and devotion to each other will give us the edge we will need come spring --- the one that will make us Patriot League Champions.
