LEWISBURG, Pa. - Bucknell's four ranked wrestlers each posted 2-0 records and the Bison won all but four individual bouts as the Bison swept Princeton and Drexel by a combined 73-12 score Friday inside Davis Gym. Bucknell opened the day with a 38-6 victory over the Tigers and ended it with a 35-6 win against the Dragons. Drexel and Princeton also faced each other Friday with the Dragons posting a 32-9 victory.
No. 19 David Marble (133 pounds), No. 8 Kevin LeValley (149), No. 13 Andy Rendos (165) and No. 14 Shane Riccio (174) combined for eight of Bucknell's 16 victories Friday. Marble's 4-3 decision over Drexel's No. 13 Steve Mytych was the lone matchup between ranked opponents, while LeValley scored two points in the final minute against the Dragons' Brett McCurdy for a tight 5-3 decision. Rendos (tech fall, major decision) and Riccio (pin, major decision) both posted a pair of bonus-point victories.
Against Princeton (3-5, 1-2 EIWA), Bucknell (5-3, 3-0 EIWA) lost the 125-pound bout and the heavyweight match, but won all eight in between. Freshmen Zac Hancock, Corey Lear and Joe McMullan each recorded victories for the Bison.
Wrestling at 141 pounds, Hancock followed a Marble tech fall with a comeback 5-3 decision over Luis Ramos. He trailed 3-0, but scored two near falls in the final 60 seconds for all five of his points in the bout.
Making his first appearance in a dual this year, Lear tallied a 15-7 major decision over Danny Scotton. The athletic rookie scored eight of his points in the second period to forge a commanding 10-4 advantage.
McMullan picked up the third win by a freshman for the bison when he pinned Charles Fox in 2:40 at 197. It was the first pin of the season for McMullan, who led 8-0 at the time of his victory.
In the match against Drexel (4-4), Bucknell jumped out to an 18-0 lead thanks to a forfeit at 125, decisions by Marble and LeValley and a pin in 1:31 by John Regan, who was competing in his first dual of the season. Additionally, the Dragons were deducted a team point during the 149-pound match thanks to unsportsmanlike conduct on the bench.
Drexel's Joe Booth finally got the Dragons on the board at 157, but three of the next four Bison victories went for bonus points as Rendos and Riccio posted back-to-back major decisions and Jay Hahn recorded his second pin of the year at 197 to improve to 9-3.
With his two victories Friday, Rendos boosted his career record to 105-27, putting him one win shy of equaling Hall of Famer Tom Marchetti for second place on Bucknell's all-time list.
LeValley improved to 20-3 this year with his two victories. He is a perfect 16-0 against unranked opponents.
Bucknell's 5-3 record is its best since it opened the 2000-01 campaign 7-3. Additionally, it is 3-0 against EIWA competition for the first time since 1999-2000 and is now 19-7 at home since the beginning of the 2006-07 season.
The Bison will next be in action Dec. 29-30 at the Midlands Championships in Evanston, Ill. Bucknell's next home match is Jan. 21 against Brown at 7 p.m. That dual will be broadcast live on Bison Vision.
