LEWISBURG, Pa. - The Bucknell wrestling team headed to the Virginia Duals expecting to make it to the second day, but the Bison lost their first two matches to No. 10 Oklahoma (28-7) and Michigan (21-15) Friday at Hampton Coliseum. The two losses sent Bucknell to an evening consolation match against UC Davis, which it won 32-9 to finish the tournament with a 1-2 record.
No. 18 David Marble (Harpursville, N.Y./Harpursville Central) won all three of his bouts at 133 pounds, but Bucknell (6-5) managed just six total victories against Oklahoma and Michigan. Kevin LeValley (Hugo, Colo./Limon), Shane Riccio (Warren, N.J./Watchung Hills) and Corey Lear (Orangeville, Pa./Benton Area), who was wrestling at 165 pounds in place of injured All-American Andy Rendos, each tallied to wins Friday.
Marble upended three unranked foes Friday, two of them by decision and one by major decision. He now has a 19-7 record this season and reached the 100-win mark for his career.
While Marble went 3-0, Riccio posted what was the most impressive victory of the day. The senior 174-pounder who is ranked 17th nationally, defeated Oklahoma's No. 8 Jeff James 3-0. Unfortunately, Riccio was later upset by Michigan's unranked Justin Zeerip.
LeValley, who is ranked seventh at 149 pounds, also faced a top-10 opponent against the Sooners, but came up on the wrong side of a 6-4 decision against No. 4 Kyle Terry. Terry was the 10th nationally ranked opponent LeValley has faced this season. With a 2-1 record Friday, LeValley is 28-5 this season, putting him one shy of equaling his career high for victories.
Making his first career start at 165 pounds, Lear lost to No. 16 Tyler Caldwell, 6-2, against Oklahoma. However, the freshman bounced back to post two victories against Michigan and UC Davis.
Bucknell faced a strong Oklahoma team in its opener and only Marble and Riccio were victorious. Overall, the Sooners had eight nationally ranked wrestlers in their lineup and seven of them won. The highest ranked Oklahoma wrestler was 197-pounder Eric Lapotsky, a former Bison, who defeated Jay Hahn (Malvern, Pa./Great Valley) 6-2.
Bucknell claimed four of the first six bouts against Michigan to take a 15-6 lead, but the Wolverines won all four of the heaviest weight classes for the come-from-behind victory.
The Bison easily defeated UC Davis, jumping out to a 15-0 lead and capitalizing on two forfeits. Bucknell led 32-3 going into the heavyweight bout.
The Bison will be idle until Jan. 21 when they host Brown at 7 p.m. inside Davis Gym. The match will be broadcast live on Bison Vision.
