LEWISBURG, Pa. – Bucknell men's water polo senior goalie Nick Donahue (Brooklyn, N.Y./Lawrenceville) was named the Damon's Bison Athlete of the Week on Monday following a 30-save performance at the Southern Championships this past weekend.
The host Bison, who were seeded third in the 10-team Southern Championships field, had a disappointing weekend with a pair of home overtime losses to league rivals, but Donahue was a bright spot. He made 30 saves and yielded just 24 goals while logging more than 100 minutes of playing time.
Donahue began the weekend by making seven stops in an 11-6 victory over Mercyhurst. He then followed with 10 saves and 13 saves opposite No. 17 Princeton and Johns Hopkins, respectively. Both contests ended in one-goal overtime losses for Bucknell (15-13).
A two-year starter, Donahue now has 196 saves this season and 456 in his career. His .525 save percentage leads the team and he now owns a .523 career save percentage.
Donahue now has nine double-figure save performance this season, including five in his last seven contests. The veteran has started 25 of Bucknell's 28 games this year and has appeared in all but one. His 17 saves last month against George Washington were the most by a Bison netminder since 2004.
Donahue is the second men's water polo player to be named Damon's Bison Athlete of the Week this season, joining Howie Kalter. It is also the second career honor for Donahue, who was cited last October after making 47 saves in a five-game weekend for Bucknell.
By virtue of its fourth-place finish at the Southern Championships, Bucknell earned a berth into the Eastern Championship. The Bison will play CWPA Northern Division champion Brown in their first game at the three-day event on Friday, Nov. 20, at 2:30 p.m. The Eastern Championship is taking place at MIT this year.
