LEWISBURG, Pa. – Bucknell softball has named its 2010 captains, head coach Heather Rakosik announced Thursday. Seniors Sherry Finkel (Morgantown, W. Va./University) and Alyssa Okita (Davis, Calif./Davis), and junior Sam Rollandi (San Carlos, Calif./N.D. Belmont) have been tabbed to lead the Bison to their fourth consecutive Patriot League Tournament.
“Alyssa, Sherry and Sam are three very capable leaders both on and off the field,” said Rakosik. “They all bring different characteristics to the table, but the common thread in the trio is that they will work tirelessly to lead themselves and their teammates to a championship.”
After three years in Orange and Blue, Finkel has played in 96 career games. The outfielder/utility player has recorded a .271 career batting average, including a personal-best .299 as a freshman. An environmental studies major, Finkel has also had her share of success of the field, being named to the Bucknell Dean's List and Patriot League Academic Honor Roll.
Okita has put together a similar resume, seeing action in 90 career games despite missing part of last season with a knee injury. The shortstop/third baseman hit a career-best .296 last spring, bring her career batting average to .251. Okita also has earned a place on the Dean's List and Patriot League Academic Honor Roll while majoring in mathematics.
The youngest, but certainly not the least experienced, of the captains, Rollandi has amassed a .230 batting average over 55 career games. In two years, the outfielder/second baseman has committed just one error, showing her value in the field as well.
The trio helped Bucknell to post some impressive numbers last year, allowing the team to move onto a number of program top-five lists. The 2009 Bison rank second in runs batted in (185), and third in runs scored (210), walks (130) and games played (51).
The Bison finished the 2009 season 19-32 overall and 9-11 in the Patriot League, earning the third seed in the league tournament. Their new campaign gets underway March 6-7, 2010 with the George Mason Invitational. Bucknell will face the host Patriots and Marist in their first action of the spring.
