CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Richie Hyden (Melbourne, Australia/Greenwich (Conn.)), Howie Kalter (Durham, N.H./Phillips Academy Andover) and Johnny Stupp (St. Louis, Mo./Mary Institute) each scored two goals as the Bucknell men's water polo team defeated No. 20 Johns Hopkins in the third-place game at the Eastern Championship Sunday. The third-place finish marked the best for the Bison at the Eastern Championship since a runner-up showing in 1993.
The win helped Bucknell avenge a loss to the Blue Jays in the Southern Championships third-place game, which the Bison lost 9-8 in overtime at Kinney Natatorium two weeks ago. Bucknell (17-14) also claimed the season series with Johns Hopkins by a 3-2 margin.
Bucknell, which defeated a ranked opponent for the fourth time this year and the first time since Oct. 3, scored three goals in the first, second and fourth quarters en route to its first double-digit offensive output since the first round of the Southern Championships. The Bison posted assists on nine of their 10 goals and converted 5 of 12 six-on-five opportunities, compared to Johns Hopkins' 2-for-9 showing.
Stupp, who was one of four Bucknell seniors playing their final games, had a solid all-around contest with one assist, two steals and two ejections drawn to go along with his pair of goals. Classmate Nick Donahue (Brooklyn, N.Y./Lawrenceville) registered five saves in goal, bringing his season total to 214, a new career high, one better than the 213 he tallied as a junior.
Fellow seniors Randy Ang (Hillsborough, Calif./Sacred Heart Prep) and Andrew Nelson (Palos Verdes, Calif./Palos Verdes) also contributed to the victory. Ang, who made his 25th start of the year posted one steal, while Nelson, who was part of the starting unit for the 30th time, dished out his 14th assist of the campaign.
Junior Sean Coghlan (Chicago, Ill./Brother Rice) equaled his career high with six ejections drawn and added one goal and an assist on the offensive end. Coghlan, who ranks third to Hyden and 2009 Bucknell graduate Alex Lampley on the single-season ejections drawn list with 65, posted six ejections drawn three times this fall.
Hyden added one assist to go along with his pair of goals, giving him 180 goals, 124 assists and 304 points in his three-year career. He is just four goals, one assist and eight points shy of 10th place on the Bison career lists.
Sunday's contest marked Bucknell's 17th outing against a ranked foe in 2009. The Bison were 4-13 in those games with the other three wins coming at Kinney Natatorium.
Bucknell has now finished in the top five at the Eastern Championship six consecutive years.
Following the tournament, Hyden and Coghlan were named Second Team All-Eastern Championship. Hyden totaled four goals, five assists and 10 ejections drawn in the three games this weekend, while Coghlan registered three goals, three assists and nine ejections drawn.
Navy and Princeton squared off in the title game Sunday afternoon. The winner of that contest earns the CWPA automatic bid to the NCAA Championship. The Mids have won the title each of the last three years.
