Bucknell Men's Water Polo Earns Third Seed at Southern Championships

LEWISBURG, Pa. - The Collegiate Water Polo Association announced the seeds for this weekend's (Nov. 6-8) Southern Championships and Bucknell is seeded third in the 10-team field. The Bison will open the tournament Saturday morning at 9 a.m. against sixth-seeded Mercyhurst.
The Southern Championships is seeded based on votes from the head coaches of the participating teams. The event consists of the five teams from the CWPA Southern Division, East Region and the five teams from the CWPA Southern Division, West Region. The East Region teams took the top five seeds, while the bottom five seeds were given to the West Region squads.
Navy is the No. 1 overall seed in the field, while Princeton is No. 2. Bucknell tied with those teams for first place in the division during the regular season. Fourth-seeded Johns Hopkins and fifth-seeded George Washington rounded out the top half of the bracket.
The Southern Championships begin on Friday night at 8 p.m. with seventh-seeded Gannon and 10th-seeded Salem International squaring off. Washington and Jefferson and Penn State Behrend will follow at 9:15 p.m. The championship game is slated for Sunday afternoon at 3:30 p.m.
If Bucknell (14-11) defeats Mercyhurst in its opening game, the Bison will play at 4:30 p.m. Saturday against Princeton, Gannon or Salem International.
The top four teams in the Southern Championships earn an automatic berth to the Eastern Championship in two weeks. The winner of the Eastern Championship earns an automatic berth to the NCAA Championships.
Bucknell last hosted the Southern Championships in 2006 and finished in third place.
