LEWISBURG, Pa. - Bucknell freshman guard Bryson Johnson (Pictou, Nova Scotia/St. David Catholic) earned the first Patriot League Rookie of the Week award of the 2009-10 season on Monday after a strong debut performance over the weekend at the World Vision Invitational in Providence, R.I.
On opening night against Mercer, Johnson came off the bench and knocked down 3-pointers on six of his first eight attempts. He finished the game with a team-high 18 points, which was tied for the third-highest total by a Bison freshman in a season opener.
Johnson was kept scoreless in a close loss to Big East foe Providence in game No. 2 of the tournament, but he bounced back with another double-digit game in the finale against Bryant on Sunday. In that game he made 3 of 8 attempts from the arc and scored 11 points. With the Bison up by two in the first half, Johnson canned two treys in a span of just 18 seconds to stretch the lead to eight, and they went on to win the game 59-56.
Through three games, Johnson is averaging 9.7 points per game and is shooting 40.9 percent (9-22) from 3-point distance. His average of 3.0 treys per game is tied for the Patriot League lead with teammate Bryan Cohen.
Bucknell is 1-2 on the season and will be back on the road on Wednesday night at Delaware at 7 p.m.
