PRINCESS ANNE, Md. - The Bucknell cross country teams earned a pair of top-40 finishes in Sarah Moniz (Topsfield, Mass./Masconomet Regional) and Andrew Huebner (Hampton Falls, N.H./The Governor's Academy) at the NCAA Mid-Atlantic Regional Championships in Princess Anne, Md., on Saturday afternoon. Despite the strong individual placing by the Bison's top runners, the teams finished a disappointing 12th on the women's side and 11th on the men's.
Huebner led the Orange and Blue once again finishing the 10-kilometer course in 33 minutes, 11 seconds to earn 34th place overall. Kevin McGoldrick (West Chester, Pa./Henderson) maintained his second-place position on the squad, taking 55th in 33:44.
"Our guys got out way too slow and were unable to move past people over the second half of the race due to the standing water and mud," said head coach Kevin Donner.
Rounding out the top five on the men's side were Stephen Dorsey (North Wales, Pa./La Salle HS) and Charles Murphy (Short Hills, N.J./Millburn) in 70th and 77th, respectively. Conor McNamara (Baldwin, N.Y./Chaminade) scored in 84th place overall.
With the individual title, Andrew Bumbalough of Georgetown helped his team earn the team win. Bumbalough finished in 31:41. The Hoyas edged out Villanova 38-48.
The women were without one of their top runners in Stephanie Fulmer (Pottstown, Pa./St. Pius X) and, although Donner felt that left his team a bit flat, Moniz reassumed her position at the front of the Orange and Blue's pack. The junior claimed 38th place in a 6-kilometer time of 22:44.
Also finishing in the top half of the field were Alysha Hooper (Meaford, Ontario/St. Mary's), Kelly Grosskurth (Huntington Station, N.Y./Half Hallow Hills East) and Alexa Griffiths (Tamaqua, Pa./Tamaqua). Hooper completed the course in 23:30 for 69th place. Grosskurth and Griffiths finished within just seconds of each other with Grosskurth claiming 84th in 23:48 and Griffiths 85th in 23:50.
Villanova won the women's title with 23 points and claimed the top two individual places. The Wildcats' Sheila Reid and Amanda Marino finished first and second helping their team handle the competition. Princeton was second with 77 points.
Despite not placing as high as they would have liked in the meet, Donner is comforted by the fact that fall has still been a great success for the Bison.
"Overall, both teams had a successful season, and this race does not diminish what we did accomplish," said Donner.
The Bison will compete again next week with the men at the IC4A Championships and the women at the ECAC Championships. Both will race in Bronx, N.Y.
