LEWISBURG, Pa. – Bucknell men's water polo senior goalie Nick Donahue (Brooklyn, N.Y./Lawrenceville) earned his second honor in two days on Tuesday when he was named the Collegiate Water Polo Association Southern Division Co-Player of the Week. The honor came one day after Donahue was named the Damon's Bison Athlete of the Week. Donahue shared the CWPA honor with George Washington's John-Claude Wright.
Donahue recorded 30 saves in three games at the Southern Championships this past weekend. The Bison went 1-2, but both losses were by one goal in overtime to league rivals No. 17 Princeton and Johns Hopkins. Despite the losses, Bucknell (15-13) still earned a berth in the Eastern Championship for the 10th consecutive year.
A two-year starter, Donahue was a bright spot for Bucknell at Southerns, registering 30 saves while yielding just 24 goals in more than 100 minutes of playing time.
Donahue began the weekend by making seven stops in an 11-6 victory over Mercyhurst. He then followed with 10 saves against Princeton and 13 more opposite Johns Hopkins.
Donahue now has 196 saves this season and 456 in his career. His .525 save percentage leads the team and he now owns a .523 career save percentage.
Thanks to his two outings with at least 10 saves over the weekend, Donahue now has nine double-figure save performances this season, including five in his last seven contests. The veteran has started 25 of Bucknell's 28 games this year and has appeared in all but one. His 17 saves last month against George Washington were the most by a Bison netminder since 2004.
The Southern Division Player of the Week honor is the second of the season for Donahue, who was also cited in late September after totaling 28 saves in three league contests.
The Bison will play CWPA Northern Division champion Brown in their first game at the three-day Eastern Championship on Friday, Nov. 20, at 2:30 p.m. The Eastern Championship is taking place at MIT this year.
