LEWISBURG, Pa. - The Bucknell men's water polo team had one of its biggest regular-season wins in recent memory on Saturday inside Kinney Natatorium when it defeated No. 10 Navy by one goal. Thanks to their efforts in that victory, junior Howie Kalter (Durham, N.H./Phillips Academy Andover) was named the Damon's Bison Athlete of the Week and freshman Brian Barron (Oak Park, Ill./Fenwick) earned CWPA Southern Division Rookie of the Week accolades for the second straight week.
Kalter, who ranks second on the Bison in goals (27) and points (38), tallied a team-high three goals in the come-from-behind win over the Mids. The three goals were a season high and came just one shy of his career high. Kalter added an additional goal and an assist, along with a team-high three steals and one field block Sunday in a loss to No. 19 Princeton.
A left-hander, Kalter has now netted at least one goal in 29 consecutive games. He is second on the Bison with 16 steals this season, while his career point total of 117 is second among current players, behind only Richie Hyden.
Kalter is the first men's water polo player to be named Damon's Bison Athlete of the Week since Nick Donahue last October.
Barron earned the Rookie of the Week from the CWPA for the second consecutive week, based mainly on his sprinting performance. The freshman won 5 of 6 sprints against nationally ranked opponents Navy and Princeton. He has now won 18 of 31 sprints this season, placing him tied for eighth on the program's single-season sprints won list.
The lone Bison freshman to see regular playing time this year, Barron, who has appeared in all 16 games, earned his third start of the year Sunday against Princeton and chipped in one steal in addition to his three sprints won.
Bucknell (10-6, 4-1 CWPA Southern Division) defeated No. 10 Navy 12-11 on Saturday to extend its winning streak to six games. The Bison then lost 12-5 at Princeton on Sunday.
Bucknell will next be in action Thursday, Oct. 8, at George Washington. The league contest is slated for a 7:30 p.m. start.
