LEWISBURG, Pa. - Bucknell cross country will make the trip it has been eyeing since the season began nearly two months ago, traveling to Hamilton, N.Y., for the Patriot League Championships on Saturday, Oct. 31. The Bison men will hit Colgate's Harry Lang Cross Country Course first, racing at 11 a.m. The Bison women will follow at 12 p.m. in an attempt to reclaim their league title.
WOMEN'S NOTEBOOK
- Bucknell was going for its fourth consecutive Patriot League Championship last year when Navy pulled off the upset, winning the team title by 39 points. The Bison return three of their top four finishers from 2008, including sophomore Stephanie Fulmer (Pottstown, Pa./St. Pius X), who finished second individually and was named the Rookie of the Year.
- Fulmer has raced just twice this season while recovering from injury. Her late start did not show in those competitions, however, as she finished third on the team at the Paul Short Memorial Run and second among Bison finishers at the Penn State National Invitational two weeks later.
- Sarah Moniz (Topsfield, Mass./Masconomet Regional) has been atop Bucknell's list of finishers in each of her three races this fall. The junior co-captain also earned a pair of top-five finishes to start the season, including taking runner-up at Duquesne.
- Rounding out the Bison's trio of top runners is Alysha Hooper (Meaford, Ontario/St. Mary's). Like Moniz, the sophomore has a pair of top-five finishes, including a career-best third place at Duquesne.
- Bucknell's ranking in the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) Mid-Atlantic Regional poll stayed steady at seventh this week. Joining Bucknell was Navy in 10th. It was the second consecutive week as the Patriot League's top-ranked squad.
- Lauren Wiemken (Howell, N.J./Howell) was named the Patriot League Runner of the Week on Monday. The junior earned her first career title, winning the Bloomsburg Open in 20 minutes, 28 seconds over five kilometers. Wiemkin led a Bison squad that claimed six of the top seven places at the meet.
MEN'S NOTEBOOK
- Bucknell claimed fifth place at the 2008 Patriot League Championships. The Orange and Blue trailed Army and Navy, which tied for first place, Lehigh and American. Conor McNamara (Baldwin, N.Y./Chaminade) led the Bison a year ago, placing 15th overall. Bucknell will return each of its top three finishers from last fall in McNamara, Andrew Huebner (Hampton Falls, N.H./The Governor's Academy) and Baron Willeford (New Orleans, La./Columbia Prep (N.Y.)).
- Huebner will try to keep his good fortune running for another week. The senior co-captain has three top-10 finishes this year. Most recently, he claimed eighth in 25:29 on a cold and muddy 8K course at the Penn State National Invitational.
- Kevin McGoldrick (West Chester, Pa./Henderson) has had an equally successful season. Also a senior co-captain, he has posted a trio of top-15 finishes in his final campaign, including a 14th-place outing in 25:40 at Penn State.
- After crossing the line as the Bison's top finisher at last year's Patriot League Championships, McNamara picked up in 2009 where he left off. The senior opened the season with a pair of fourth-place finishes at Colgate and Duquesne.
- Bucknell is one of four teams ranked in the USTFCCCA regional polls this week. Picked eighth in the Mid-Atlantic Region, the Bison trail No. 4 Navy and No. 7 American. Army is also ranked 12th in the Northeast Region.
- Michael Ryan (Schnectady, N.Y./Niskayuna) and Robert Yamnicky (Shelton, Conn./Shelton) pulled in the Patriot League weekly awards on Monday. Yamnicky and Ryan finished first and second, respectively, at the Bloomsburg Open last weekend. Yamnicky was awarded the league's Rookie of the Week, while Ryan was voted the Runner of the Week. The duo helped Bucknell to take each of the top 12 places in the non-scored meet.
