LEWISBURG, Pa. - A trio of Bucknell cross country runners were named among the Patriot League's top athletes on Tuesday. Michael Ryan (Schnectady, N.Y./Niskayuna) and Lauren Wiemken (Howell, N.J./Howell) were named Runners of the Week, while Robert Yamnicky (Shelton, Conn./Shelton) was selected as the league's male Rookie of the Week.
Yamnicky and Ryan claimed first and second, both with a time of 24 minutes, 27 seconds over seven kilometers, at the Bloomsburg Open last Saturday. Yamnicky just edged out his teammate for the top spot, clocking in just .35 seconds before Ryan. The duo helped the Bison to take the first 12 places at the non-scoring meet.
Wiemken won a title of her own in the women's race. The junior finished the 5K course in 20:28. Her victory led the way as the Bucknell women's squad claimed six of the top seven places against Bloomsburg and Susquehanna.
The awards are the first in all three's careers. Bucknell received two other weekly awards on Sept. 9 in Andrew Huebner (Runner of the Week) and Anthony Rizzo (Rookie of the Week).
The successful outing at the Bloomsburg Open was the final tune-up for the much anticipated Patriot League Championships on Saturday, Oct. 31 in Hamilton, N.Y. The Bison women are looking to reclaim their league team title after finishing runner-up to Navy a year ago. The men's squad will be looking to pull off some upsets of its own after being voted to finish fifth in the Patriot League Preseason Poll. The league championship meet, hosted by Colgate, is set for an 11 a.m. start.
