BLOOSMBURG, Pa. - Bucknell cross country had a very successful outing at Bloomsburg University on Saturday with both the men's and women's teams collecting the top five places in their respective races against Bloomsburg and Susquehanna. Robert Yamnicky (Shelton, Conn./Shelton) took the men's title, while Lauren Wiemken (Howell, N.J./Howell) won the women's competition.
The Bison women claimed six of the top seven places in the non-scored meet. Wiemken completed the five-kilometer course in a time of 20:28.
"Lauren has been running very consistently all season," said head coach Kevin Donner of his junior. "It did not surprise me to see her win this meet."
Wiemken was followed in the top five by Samantha Bower (Greensburg, Pa./Greensburg-Salem) in second (20:35), Sara Lederman (Livingston, N.J./Livingston) in third (20:41), Eileen Foley (Herndon, Va./Chantilly) in fourth (21:05) and Emily Liggett (Grosse Point, Mich./The Lawrenceville School (N.J.)) in fifth (21:08).
Overall, Donner was pleased with the way his women's team completed the day and what the meet meant to the squad's preparation in the final stretch of the season.
"We held out our top nine runners to prepare them for the Patriot League Championships," said Donner. "This gave the rest of our team the opportunity to get some valuable cross country experience as well as give us a little more data on who to pick to represent Bucknell at the Patriot League Championships.
The Bison men were equally successful, occupying the top 12 places in the 7K race. Yamnicky took the title, but he was followed extremely closely by teammate Michael Ryan (Schnectady, N.Y./Niskayuna). Officially, both clocked in at 24:27. Rounding out the top five were Timothy Ryan (Schnectady, N.Y./Niskayuna) in third (24:21), Jake Schroeder (York, Pa./York Suburbia) in fourth (24:28) and Ryne Carney (Dimock, Pa./Elk Lake) in fifth (24:59).
"Our men's team has a tremendous amount of depth and that really showed today," said Donner after the meet. "Robert Yamnicky has really been coming on strong as of late and I've been really impressed with the seasons Michael and Tim Ryan have put together for us."
Donner and the Bison will hope to put together a few more strong races as they head into the final weeks of the season. Bucknell will travel to Hamilton, N.Y., on Saturday, Oct. 31 for the Patriot League Championships hosted by Colgate. The women's squad will try to reclaim its league title after finishing second to Navy last year.
