BLACKSBURG, Va. – Bucknell women's tennis played both its matches at the ITA Regional Championships at Virginia Tech on Friday, falling in both singles and doubles. Tania Varela (Quito, Ecuador/Alliance Academy) and Carlin Calcaterra (Hinsdale, Ill./Hinsdale) were unable to pull out the victories for the Bison, closing the fall portion of their schedule.
Varela and Calcaterra opened competition in doubles on Friday morning. The duo played a tight match against Radford's Petra Dajevic and Ivana Tomaic. The Highlanders proved too much, however, winning 8-6.
Varela came back later in the day to face Isabell Raich of Marshall in the bottom half of the singles draw. The seeded Raich came away with the win in straight sets, 6-2, 6-4.
With the pair of losses, Bucknell will be idle until its spring schedule gets underway on Jan. 23, 2010. The Bison will travel to University Park, Pa., to take on Penn State in dual competition. The men's team will also be back in action on the same day but will head to Philadelphia to play Penn.
