LEWISBURG, Pa. - Bucknell men's water polo junior Richie Hyden (Melbourne, Australia/Greenwich (Conn.)) was named the Collegiate Water Polo Association Southern Division Player of the Week on Tuesday. It is the second time Hyden has been honored this year, while it is the fourth Player of the Week citation for a Bison this season.
An Honorable Mention All-America selection last year, Hyden totaled five goals, three assists, four steals and 13 ejections drawn in two games this past weekend. The Bison defeated Johns Hopkins 13-8 Friday night behind a season-high seven points and six ejections drawn from Hyden. The next day Bucknell lost to No. 13 Navy by a 10-7 score despite a career-high seven ejections drawn by Hyden, the most by a Bison since at least 2004.
Hyden's seven points in the win over the Blue Jays marked the most by a Bucknell player this year. He leads the team with 70 points and 29 assists this season. Additionally, Hyden paces the squad with 48 ejections drawn, placing him fourth on the Bucknell single-season list, two shy of his career high.
A left-hander, Hyden has scored at least one goal in each of the last 13 games he has played. He now has 168 goals, 111 assists and 279 points in his three-year career.
Hyden and the 18th-ranked Bison are idle this coming weekend, but own a 13-10 overall record this year. Bucknell is 6-2 in CWPA Southern Division play, but will likely finish third in the final standings once all tiebreakers with Princeton and Navy are settled.
