LEWISBURG, Pa. - Bucknell volleyball's Kaitlin Segal (Pacific Palisades, Calif./Harvard-Westlake) was named the Damon's Bison Athlete of the Week on Monday following a pair of outstanding performances against Lafayette and Lehigh last weekend. The junior tallied 19 kills and 26 digs in two matches to move the Bison into a third-place tie in the Patriot League standings.
Segal put up a strong defensive effort throughout play last weekend. Her 11 digs against Lafayette on Friday was second on the team. Against Lehigh one night later, she led the Bison in the category with 15, setting a personal high for the season. She also had two block assists against the Leopards.
The outside hitter's offensive attack was equally effective. Adding to her 19 total kills, Segal served three aces against Lafayette, tying a match high.
The Damon's Bison Athlete of the Week is the first of Segal's career.
With Segal's production, the Bison swept their latest competition and improved their record to 8-11 overall and 4-3 in the Patriot League. The victories against Lafayette and Lehigh marked the first time since the season's first two matches that Bucknell has won on back-to-back occasions.
Those wins also carried a lot of weight in the battle to claim one of the top four spots in the Patriot League. The top four teams at season's end will qualify for the league tournament and a chance at an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament. With half the league games played this year, Bucknell is tied with American for third place behind Army and Colgate.
The Orange and Blue will continue with league action next weekend, facing Holy Cross at 7 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 23 in Worcester, Mass. Bucknell will then travel to West Point, N.Y., for a 4 p.m. match with Army on Saturday, Oct. 24.
