ANNAPOLIS, Md. – Howie Kalter netted a team-high four goals and Richie Hyden drew a career-high seven ejections, but the No. 18 Bucknell men's water polo team was unable to overcome a 5-2 halftime deficit and lost 10-7 at No. 13 Navy Saturday night. The Bison defeated the Mids two weeks ago at Kinney Natatorium for their first victory in the series since 2004.
Bucknell (13-10, 6-2 CWPA Southern Division) trailed 3-2 at the end of the first quarter, but lost the second frame 2-0, resulting in the three-goal halftime deficit. The Bison narrowed their deficit to 6-5 heading into the final period, but could not overtake Navy.
Nick Donahue posted his seventh double-figure save performance of the season, and his second in a row this weekend, with 10 saves. He now has 162 stops this season.
Kalter, who leads Bucknell in goals with a career high-tying 42 this season, posted five points in the game. The rest of the offensive attack combined for five points with no other player registering more than one point.
Hyden, who ranks first on the team with 48 ejections drawn, drew a career-high six ejections in a win Friday at Johns Hopkins. He bettered that figure by one Saturday vs. the Mids, marking the most ejections drawn in a game since at least 2004.
Saturday's game concluded both the league and road portions of the Bucknell schedule. The Bison will close the regular season Sunday, Nov. 1, with home games against Penn State Behrend and St. Francis (N.Y.). The following week they will host the Southern Championships at Kinney Natatorium.
