LOCK HAVEN, Pa. - Bucknell cross country braved some sloppy racing conditions and last minute course changes as the men took fifth and the women placed seventh at Lock Haven on Friday afternoon after the Penn State National Invitational was canceled due to inclement weather. Andrew Huebner (Hampton Falls, N.H./The Governor's Academy) finished sixth overall to lead the Bison, while Sarah Moniz (Topsfield, Mass./Masconomet Regional) placed 28th for the Orange and Blue.
Moniz posted a time of 21 minutes, 50 seconds on the six-kilometer course to hold on to her position as Bucknell's top finisher and help her squad to a finish of seventh out of 18 teams. The junior co-captain has now been the first Bison across the finish line in each of the team's meets this fall.
Stephanie Fulmer (Pottstown, Pa./St. Pius X) was close behind her teammate in 30th place with a time of 21:53. In just her second race this season, the sophomore improved her previous 6K time by nearly 10 seconds.
Alysha Hooper (Meaford, Ontario/St. Mary's), Kelly Grosskurth (Huntington Station, N.Y./Half Hallow Hills East) and Kara Weichler (Pittsburgh, Pa./Plum) rounded out the Bison's top-five finishers.
After originally planning on racing in University Park, Pa., this morning, a combination of snow and power outages forced the meet to head to Lock Haven for an afternoon competition. Head coach Kevin Donner was pleased with how his team's responded, particularly on the women's side.
"I was very happy with our final team placing, although we still need to close up the gap between our third and fourth runners. Once we do that we will be a very good team," said Donner. "I thought the ladies handled the muddy conditions and the change in venue and time very well."
Like Moniz, Huebner also maintained his spot as the Bison's top finisher. The senior completed the 8K course in 25:29. Next across the line for Bucknell was Huebner's classmate Kevin McGoldrick (West Chester, Pa./Henderson) who registered one of his best finishes by placing 12th in 25:40.
"I thought our guys ran a pretty solid race," said Donner. "Kevin McGoldrick ran one of the best races of his career, and it was good to get Stephen Dorsey and Baron Willeford back in our top five."
Dorsey claimed 28th place overall with a time of 26:02, while Willeford placed 40th in 26:21. Also among the Bison's top five was Conor McNamara (Baldwin, N.Y./Chaminade). The senior was 38th overall (26:18).
As a unit, the Bison men finished among the top half of the field by taking fifth out of 11 teams. Winning the somewhat make-shift meet titles were Cornell for the men with 48 points and West Virginia, ranked third nationally, for the women with 27 points.
Bucknell will race again next Saturday, Oct. 24 when both the men's and women's teams travel to Bloomsburg University. The women will race at 10 a.m., followed by the men at 10:30. The race will be the final tune-up before the Bison head to Hamilton, N.Y., for the Patriot League Championships.
