LEWISBURG, Pa. - Bucknell men's water polo sophomore Richie Hyden (Melbourne, Australia/Greenwich (Conn.)) was named an Honorable Mention All-American by the Association of Collegiate Water Polo Coaches (ACWPC), it was announced Friday. Bucknell has now had an Honorable Mention All-America selection each of the last three years and four of the last five.
A First Team All-CWPA Southern Division selection, Hyden put together an impressive offensive season in 2008. He led the Bison with a career-high 87 goals, which ranked fourth nationally. Additionally, he piled up 51 assists and 138 points. The last Bucknell player with more goals was Alex Lundig (93 in 1997), more assists was Kevin Permisohn (65 in 2000) and more points was Sean Tierney (152 in 1993).
Hyden finished the season registering 16 multiple-goal games in his last 17 outings. Overall, he posted 27 multiple-goal contests and scored a season-high five goals five times. Hyden also produced a nine-goal game against Fordham, marking the most by a Bucknell player in 2008.
In addition to his offensive output, Hyden was strong on the defensive end with 30 steals and won 39 of 56 sprints.
Through just two years, Hyden has racked up 127 goals, 82 assists and 209 points in his career. He is on pace to become the first Bison to join the program's career top 10 points and assists list since 2000 and the first to join the goals ledger since 1997.
The 2007 CWPA Southern Division Rookie of the Year, Hyden was one of just four players from the East Coast that were honored by the ACWPC on Friday. Navy's Michael Mulvey was a Third Team All-America selection, while his teammate Kyle Wertz and Princeton's Brendan Colgan were Honorable Mention All-America choices along with Hyden.
Hyden followed in the footsteps of former Bison Brad Roslyn (2004), Mark Masterson (2006) and Jason Rechel (2007), who have also been named Honorable Mention All-Americans in recent years. Overall, seven Bucknell men's water polo players have earned Honorable Mention All-America recognition. Scott Schulte twice was named a Second Team All-American (1979, 1980).
This past fall, Hyden helped the Bison to a solid 17-16 record and a fifth-place showing at the Eastern Championship. It was the fourth time in the last five years Bucknell has finished above .500 despite playing a difficult schedule featuring 17 ranked opponents.
