LEWISBURG, Pa. – Bucknell sophomore forward G.W. Boon (Harvest, Ala./Sparkman) earned a spot in the starting five last week after some recent stellar play, and after leading the Bison to a pair of victories over Lafayette and Colgate he was rewarded with Patriot League Player of the Week and Damon's Bison Athlete of the Week accolades.
In a 71-61 win over Lafayette, Boon scored 20 points and grabbed five rebounds. He made 8 of 14 shots from the field, including 4 of 7 from 3-point range. He hit four treys and scored 14 points in the first half alone, staking Bucknell to a 11-point halftime lead.
In Saturday's 64-62 overtime win over Colgate, Boon had 15 points and four rebounds, and he was especially clutch late in the game. The Bison trailed by four with a minute to play in the overtime period when Boon hit a long 3-pointer. He then blocked a Colgate shot to get his team the ball back, and Bucknell won it on a 3-pointer from teammate Darryl Shazier with 0:02 remaining.
Boon missed a large chunk of the preseason with a shoulder injury, and he got off to a slow start early in the year. He scored only 14 points in the first four games of the year, but in game No. 5 he poured in a career-high 24 points against Wagner, and he has been a force ever since. He is averaging 14.4 points per game in his last 10 games and his 16.0 average in Patriot League games ranks third in the league.
All told, Boon is second on the team in scoring at 11.3 ppg, and his 4.5 rebounds per game also rank No. 2 on the squad. He is shooting 40.0 percent (36-90) from 3-point distance, sixth-best in the Patriot League.
The weekly honors for Boon are the first of his career.
Bucknell now embarks on a three-game road trip, beginning at Lehigh on Wednesday night at 7 p.m.
