LEWISBURG, Pa. - Bucknell women's water polo junior Valentina Rozas (Pico Rivera, Calif./El Rancho) was named the Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA) Southern Division Player of the Week on Monday after tallying nine goals and dishing out three assists in three games at the Michigan Kick-Off this past weekend. Additionally, freshman Amanda Skonezney (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Cumberland Valley) earned CWPA Southern Division Rookie of the Week honors.
Rozas scored three goals in each of the three games she played and is currently tied for the team lead with 12 points. Additionally, the 2008 Honorable Mention All-American drew 11 ejections this past weekend, including five against Colorado State. Rozas' nine goals are four more than any other Bison, while she now ranks 11th on the Bucknell career points list with 170.
Skonezney was the only Bison freshman to start on the opening weekend of the 2009 season and she appeared in the starting unit in all four games. She ranks second on the team with six steals and won 6 of 14 sprints. Against Colorado State, Skonezney won all four sprints, marking the first time a Bucknell player had accomplished that feat since Shana Palencia was 5-for-5 against Cal Baptist in 2007.
Rozas and Skonezney earned their honors after a weekend in which the Bison faced three top-10 teams (No. 3 UCLA, No. 7 San Jose State, No. 8 Arizona State). Bucknell came away from the weekend with a 1-3 record and is now idle until the Princeton Open on Feb. 7.
