LEWISBURG, Pa. - Molly Goebel (New Canaan, Conn./New Canaan), a member of the Bucknell women's swimming and diving team, was named Damon's Bison Athlete of the week on Monday following a weekend in which she played a part in four first-place finishes.
Goebel had a solid showing Saturday as the Bison defeated Patriot League foe Army, 180-96. The sophomore posted first-place showings in the 50- and 100-yard freestyle events. She also swam the butterfly leg (26.21 seconds) of the 200 medley relay that posted a time of 1:48.69.
In the 50 free, Goebel finished nearly a second ahead of teammate Sarah Suchoff as she timed in under 24.50 for the seventh time in eight races this season. In the 100 free, Goebel was just .31 seconds off her best time of the year as she touched the wall in 53.28 to lead a 1-2-3 Bucknell sweep of the event.
On Sunday, the Bison traveled to Columbia and fell to the Lions by a 155-88 score. Goebel helped the 200 free relay quartet to a first-place finish, her fourth of the weekend. She also took second in the 100 free (54.00) and fourth in the 200 free (1:59.93) to cap a busy weekend.
Goebel, who was a Second Team All-Patriot League selection in 2008 as a freshman and already appears on the Bucknell top-10 lists of three different events, is the first member of the women's swimming and diving squad to earn Bison Athlete of the Week plaudits this season.
Goebel and her teammates will be in action this Saturday, Jan. 24, when they host Patriot League rival Lehigh at 1 p.m. inside Kinney Natatorium. Both the Bison men's and women's teams will celebrate Senior Day prior to the start of the meet.
