LEWISBURG, Pa. – Bucknell men's water polo sophomore Sean Coghlan (Chicago, Ill./Brother Rice) had a breakout weekend at the ECAC Championship and was duly recognized for his performance as he was named the Collegiate Water Polo Association Southern Division Player of the Week on Tuesday.
Coghlan entered the weekend with eight career goals and nine career assists, but exploded for eight goals and four assists in four games against MIT and at the ECAC Championship. He also totaled one steal and drew seven ejections as he led Bucknell (7-5) to a 3-1 record and a third-place showing at the ECAC Championship.
A starter in 11 games this season, Coghlan got off to a good start with a career-high two goals in a 12-6 win over MIT last Friday evening. That career high was short-lived, however, as he piled up three more goals and two assists for a career-high five points in a two-goal win over No. 18 Brown in the first round of the ECAC Championship Saturday morning.
After one goal and four ejections drawn against No. 12 St. Francis (N.Y.), Coghlan wrapped up his weekend by leading the Bison to a victory over George Washington. Bucknell was playing without leading scorer Richie Hyden and had lost to the Colonials by two goals eight days earlier. Coghlan totaled two goals and two assists in the contest.
Coghlan, who was the first Bison honored with a weekly award from the CWPA this year, is third on the team with 15 goals and is tied for third with 26 points. His 20 ejections drawn stand second on the squad, while his 11 starting assignments place him tied for second.
Coghlan will try to continue his stellar play this weekend when Bucknell kicks off league play. The Bison will play at Johns Hopkins Friday night (8 p.m.) and at Navy (12 p.m.) and George Washington (7 p.m.) on Saturday.
