LEWISBURG, Pa. - Shannon Pitsch (Oak Brook, Ill./Fenwick), senior co-captain of the Bucknell volleyball team, was named the Damon's Bison Athlete of the Week on Monday. Pitsch broke the Bucknell career assists record in the squad's win against La Salle at the Villanova Invitational on Saturday. She also moved into ninth place for career assists in the Patriot League.
Pitsch recorded 70 assists (7.78/set) in three matches at the Villanova Invitational Friday, Sept. 19 through Saturday, Sept. 20. She also had six kills and nine digs to earn a selection to the all-tournament team.
The career record is the second time Pitsch has made her mark on the Bucknell leader board. The setter became the single-season assists record holder when she totaled 1,199 in 2006. With seven more service aces, she will also claim a spot among the top five career aces leaders in Bucknell history. Pitsch currently has 122 aces as a Bison.
During the 2008 season, Pitsch has accumulated 268 assists for an average of 5.7 assists per set. That average ranks her seventh in the Patriot League. She also has started all 13 matches for the Bison while playing in each of the team's 47 sets.
Pitsch, an English and history major, most recently was named to the 2007 ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District II University Division Second Team and the Patriot League Academic Honor Roll. With a 3.91 grade point average, it was Pitsch's third league honor for academics.
Pitsch also has made several contributions to BucknellBison.com. Her account of her summer internship with the Martha Stewart Corporation in the "There is No Off-Season for the Student-Athlete" series and her take on the season-opening tournament at Central Connecticut State can both be found on the Bucknell Athletics Web site.
The Bucknell volleyball team begins action in the Patriot League at 7 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 26 when the Bison take on Navy in Annapolis, Md. The team then travels to Washington, D.C., for a 4 p.m. matchup with American on Saturday, Sept. 27.
