BUFFALO, N.Y. - The Bucknell men's and women's cross country teams both placed second against very competitive fields at Saturday's Buffalo Stampede in Buffalo, N.Y. The Bison men's team finished with a score of 42, just four behind Binghamton's 38 in the 11-team field. Akron won the women's race with 38 points, while Bucknell had 43. Ten teams scored in the women's race.
Bucknell junior co-captain Andrew Huebner (Hampton Falls, N.H./Governor Dummer Acad.) placed third in the men's 8K, finishing the race in 25 minutes, 53.2 seconds, just 4.8 seconds behind Eric Van Ingen of Binghamton, who finished first. Conor McNamara (Baldwin, N.Y./Chaminade) finished eighth overall, turning in a time of 26:17.9, while senior co-captain Clinton Orloski (Butler, Pa./Slippery Rock) placed 10th, with a time of 26:20.8.
The top-five runners from each team had their score counted toward the overall team score. Kevin McGoldrick (13th) (West Chester, Pa./Henderson) and Dave Brown (16th) (Westborough, Mass./Westborough) rounded out the top-five finishers for Bucknell, finishing with times of 26:36.8 and 26:43.6, respectively.
"I thought our men looked a little tired today," Bucknell head coach Kevin Donner said. "We had a tough week of practice, and some guys are battling some illness. Binghamton ran a super race and deserved to win."
The Bucknell women's team had four of its members finish in the top 10, led by freshmen Stephanie Fulmer (5th) (Pottstown, Pa./St. Pius X) and Caitlin Cavanaugh (6th) (Danville, Pa./Danville Area), who finished the 5K in 18:37 and 18:42, respectively. Bison sophomore Alexa Griffiths (Tamaqua, Pa./Tamaqua) ran the race in 18:59, finishing ninth, while senior Nicole Falcaro (Dingmans Ferry, Pa./Delaware Valley) placed 10th with a time of 19:09. Sara Moniz (Topsfield, Mass./Masconomet Regional) rounded out the top-five for the Orange and Blue, finishing 13th with a time of 19:13, just ahead of senior co-captain Gillian Nordquist's (Clarkston, Mich./Clarkston) 19:16.
"I was very proud of how the women performed today," Donner said. "We were not at full strength due to injuries, yet we had some people rally step up. Akron is rated No. 5 in the Great Lakes region, and we gave them a good race."
Kim Lorentz of Akron turned in the day's best time, running a blistering 17:45, 28 seconds ahead of runner-up and last year's winner from host Buffalo, Mary Veith.
The Bucknell men's and women's cross country teams compete next on Friday, Oct. 3 at the Paul Short Memorial Invitational at Lehigh University in Bethlehem, Pa.
