Bucknell Women's Tennis Begins First Day of Bucknell Invitational

The Bucknell women's tennis team completed a largely successful first day of competition at the Bison Invitational on Friday. Fairleigh Dickinson, Johns Hopkins, Loyola (Md.), Mount St. Mary's and Villanova rounded out the six-team field that will continue play through Sunday, Sept. 21.
Bucknell had four players competing in Flight "A" Singles, with Paulina Gamboa (Mexico City, Mexico/Greengates School) and Lauren Lucido (Woodstock, Md./St. Paul's School for Girls) receiving first-round byes. Lucido won her second round match against Emily Bolchoz of Mount St. Mary's, 6-3, 7-5, while Gamboa will play Daniella Phillis of Villanova tomorrow. Bucknell senior Ashley Globerman (New City, N.Y./Clarkstown High School) defeated Joy Johnson of Loyola, 6-3, 6-4, and Dara Dwojewski (Chester, N.J./West Morris Mendham) bested Allison Solberg of Villanova 6-1, 3-6, (10-7).
Bucknell freshman Liz Larkin (Blue Bell, Pa./ Germantown Academy) won her Flight "B" Singles match against Lane Maloney of Loyola, 6-2, 5-7, (10-3), while classmate Courtney Casey (Rockville, Md./Georgetown Visitation) lost to Jessica DeCarlos of Fairleigh Dickinson, 6-1, 6-1. Dumi Iepuras (North Wales, Pa./Germantown Friends School) received a first-round bye. Tiffany Card (Little Silver, N.J./Red Bank Regional) received a first-round bye in the Flight "C" Singles bracket, and Camille Simonetti (Fairport, N.Y./Fairport) won her match against Samantha Dupaya of Mount St. Mary's, 6-0, 6-1. Bison junior Kirstyn Sotak (Shaker Heights, Ohio/Hathaway Brown) lost to Kate Monari of Villanova, 6-3, 6-2, and classmate Megan Lee (Middleburg, Va./Wakefield) lost 2-6, 6-2, (10-5), to the Mountaineers' Lauren Clark.
In Flight "A" Doubles, the pairing of Globerman and Dwojewski was victorious in their match against Clark and Emily Grugan from the Mountaineers. Iepuras and Casey lost to Phillis and Courtney Reed of Villanova, 8-3, and Gamboa and Lucido received a first-round bye. The Bison fell in both of their Flight "B" Doubles matches. Larkin and Simonetti lost to Maloney and Jackie Lionetta of Loyola, 8-3, and Card and Sotak lost to Villanova's Lyndsey Lostritto and Elizabeth Spelman, 8-5.
Play resumes Saturday, Sept. 20 at 9 a.m. at the Bucknell Tennis Courts.
