PRINCETON, N.J. – Richie Hyden (Melbourne, Australia/Greenwich (Conn.)) scored five goals for the third time this season, and totaled eight points, but the Bucknell men's water polo team dropped a 10-8 decision to George Washington on Saturday morning in its opening contest at the Princeton Invitational.
While Hyden, who leads the team with 20 goals and has netted a career-high five goals three times in five games this season, had a monster outing, he was whistled for a pair of ejections in the first quarter and had to play the rest of the contest in foul trouble. Hyden's eight points put him one shy of his career high, which he tallied last week in a win over Fordham. He now has 101 career points in 34 career games.
Alex Lampley (Reading, Pa./Governor Mifflin) was the only other Bison player to record more than one point as he posted one goal and one assist.
The game was even other than the second quarter when George Washington (3-2) outscored Bucknell 2-0. Both teams tallied two goals in the first quarter and three each in the third and fourth frames.
For the fifth time this season goalies Nick Donahue (Brooklyn, N.Y./Lawrenceville) and Miles Gilhuly (Orinda, Calif./Miramonte) split playing time for Bucknell (3-2). Donahue started and made five saves, while Gilhuly stopped three shots in the second half.
Bucknell will continue play at the Princeton Invitational Saturday afternoon at 3:15 p.m. against Iona. The Bison defeated the Gaels 15-9 at the Navy Open last Sunday.
